Branching scenarios

Overview

A branching scenario block is an interactive activity which can be customised based on user responses. A branching scenario consists of a number of questions and options. Based on the user’s response to a first question, different subsequent questions are shown. Therefore individual learners can be exposed to different questions within the one scenario based upon their behaviour or current level of understanding.

How to create branching scenarios

Creating the branching scenario block

Start in the Page management area of the Sequence page.

  1. Click on the (Select type to create) dropdown menu above the Blocks area, and select Branching Scenario block.
  2. Click Add.
  3. Enter a block heading and content in the Main tab as required. Content here can form instructions for the user.
  4. Click Save and Publish.

Adding the branching scenario

  1. Click on the Branching Scenario tab.
  2. Click on the Setup menu underneath the Scenes area, and click the Enable initial creation checkbox.
  3. Enter the desired amount of scenes into the Initial number of scenes field. Once created, extra scenes can be added or scenes can be deleted.
  4. Click Save and Publish.

Editing the Scenes

Scene names do not appear to the learner, they are for internal reference only.

  1. Click on the first scene preview in the Scene listing to edit, or click the Edit button on the right-hand side.
  2. Add content into The Question field. This is the first question a user will see.
  3. The Choices area lists the options a user is presented with after reading the question. By default one choice is already created. Click on the listing preview for the choice to edit the contents.
  4. Enter content into the Choice text field. Based upon the nature of the question, this could either be Yes/No, or custom text.
  5. Select a scene which this choice will link to. Having your scenarios mapped out prior will help in choosing/organising the scenes in the branching scenario.
  6. Add a score in the Score field (optional).
  7. Click Save and close.
  8. Add a second / alternate choice by clicking on the Add Branching Scene Choice button. Repeat steps 4 - 7 for this choice.
  9. Add as many choices as desired for this scene.

Advanced scene options

Underneath the Choices list is an Advanced menu. Listed here are further options for customising how the scene/choices will be presented to the user. The Choices header (set by default to Your Response) can be changed, as well as the positioning of the scene within the scenario. Fields for adding extra CSS to the spark (question) and choices divs can be added here also.

Organising Scenes

Once the Question and Choices for a scene have been customised, and any advanced options changed, click Save and close.

The scene which has just been edited will be updated in the Scenes list. Edit each scene as required until the branching scenario has been built.

Scenes can be removed by clicking the Unlink button on the far right of the Scenes listing, and extra scenes can be added by clicking the Add Branching Scenario Scene button.

Once the branching scenario is complete, click Save and Publish.

Options

Images can be added to both the Spark (question) and Choice field instead of, or additional to, text content.
Scenes can be rearranged in the same manner as blocks. Check the Allow drag and drop re-ordering checkbox, and drag the scene listing preview into the desired position in the scene hierarchy. Since the order of scenes is decided by the choices clicked however, the order of the scenes in the scene listing is not so important.
