Building interactive videos

Overview

Interactive video allows certain blocks to be overlaid on top of video playback, allowing for an interactive media experience for the learner. Block such as Multiple choice question blocks and pop-ups all work with interactive video, adding another level of interaction to video playback.

How to create an Interactive video

Adding the video to Glasshouse

Navigate to the Files tab on the left-hand side panel menu.

  1. Choose the appropriate folder where the video will be uploaded to.
  2. Click the Upload button and either browse to the video file or drag into the Drop Area.

Adding the video to a page

Navigate to the page where the interactive video will be built, or create a new page.

  1. Click on the (Select type to create) dropdown menu above the Blocks area, and select Content block.
  2. Click Add.
  3. Add a heading in the Heading field (or select Yes in the Would you like to hide the heading? dropdown menu).
  4. Navigate to the Media tab (to the right of the Main tab at the top of the page).
  5. In the Media to display dropdown menu, select the recently uploaded video file.
  6. Click Save and Publish.

Adding the interaction

Choose which interactive block type will be shown along with the video. Information about the different block types and how to create them can be found here. If the block is created on the same page as the video it will need to be unlinked from the page after it has been linked to the video. Instructions for this step are found below. Alternatively, the interactive block can be built on a different page and will not need to be unlinked. If this option is chosen remember that the block will then exist in two places - where it has been built, and as a part of the interactive video.

Link video and block

  1. Navigate to the Media tab in the left-hand panel menu.
  2. Click on the video that the interaction will be added to.
  3. Navigate to the Interactive Video Blocks tab at the top of the page (to the right of the Main tab).
  4. Click the Add Interactive Video Block button.
  5. Enter a title into the Title field.
  6. From the Which block should show? dropdown menu select the name of the block to add (this will be the name that was entered into the Heading field of the block earlier).
  7. In the When should this block start showing? field add the time (in whole seconds) when the block should start showing over the video.
  8. In the When should this block stop showing? field add the time (in whole seconds) when the block should finish showing.
  9. Check the Pause the video when the block starts to show checkbox if the video needs to stop while the block is visible.
  10. Select a position for the block in the Where should this block be positioned? dropdown menu.
  11. Enter the desired text (i.e. Next) into the Label for the continue button field.
  12. Click Save and Close.

Unlink the MCQ from the video page

Now that the MCQ button block is linked to the video it can be unlinked from the video page so that it does not appear underneath the video.

  1. Navigate to the page where the video block and MCQ block have been built.
  2. Click on the Unlink icon to the right of the MCQ bock preview in the Blocks area of the page. This will not delete the block, simply stop it showing underneath the video on that page.
  3. Click Publish.
