Building spaced learning

Overview

Spaced activities are messages that can be sent to a learner, buddy, mentor, coach or manager that build on what the learner has done on the current page. Spaced activities can be triggered to be sent at different time intervals, and can be triggered using a number of different methods. Multiple spaced learning activities can be created per page, e.g one activity each to be sent to the learner, buddy and mentor, however the trigger must be the same for all spaced activities on that page.

Options

Trigger options

Page load is the default trigger option for spaced learning activities. When the user first loads the page which the spaced activity is on, the activity will be automatically triggered.

CSS Selector is a useful option if the event which triggers a spaced learning activity is an incorrect answer in an activity on the page. The incorrect answer can be wrapped with the CSS class or ID, and when selected by the user, the incorrect answer will trigger the activity. Other types activities or text can be wrapped with the CSS class/ID to trigger the spaced activity also.

JSAction is most used when the event which triggers the spaced learning activity is a button or other clickable item. The Javascript action connected to the spaced activity can be edited directly from the Spaced tab.

Spaced Activity Queue Items

The Spaced Activity Queue items tab shows a list of past and future messages sent to the learner. Queued items (which have not yet been sent) can be edited by clicking on listing preview in the Spaced Activity Queued items list.

How to build spaced learning activities

Creating the spaced learning activity

Start in the Page management area of the page you wish to add the spaced learning activity to.

  1. Click on the Spaced tab (in the top tabs panel)
  2. Select an action which will trigger the spaced activity from the What learner event should start the spaced sequence? dropdown menu. By default this will be set to page load. Other options include CSS selector and Javascript action. These options are explained in more detail below.
  3. Click the Add Spaced Activity button.
  4. Enter a title into the Title/Subject field in the Main tab. This will become the subject of the email sent to the recipient.
  5. Enter the desired numerical figure into the How many days in future to trigger this. To trigger this straight away set this to 0 field.
  6. Below this field are several checkboxes specifying who the spaced learning activity should be sent to. Check all that apply.
  7. Enter the content of the spaced learning activity into the Message content field.
  8. Click Save.

Adding spaced activity blocks

Blocks of any kind can be added to a specific spaced learning activity. This is one of the most versatile features of spaced activities, allowing interactivity to be added to the message sent to the recipient to specifically follow on from what has just been learned.

  1. Click on the Blocks tab in the Spaced activity.
  2. Click on the (Select type to create) dropdown menu, select the block type and click Add.
  3. or, search for an existing block in the search bar on the right, and click Link Existing.
  4. Add content to block and click Save.
