Cloze tests

Overview

A Cloze test is a block of text where keywords have been removed and replaced with a drop down list of possible options. This is an excellent block type for testing specific areas of a learner’s knowledge, and presenting plausible alternative choices from which the user must select the correct option.

How to create a Cloze test block

Creating the Cloze test block

Start in the Page management area of the Sequence page.

  1. Click on the (Select type to create) dropdown menu above the Blocks area, and select Cloze test block.
  2. Click Add.
  3. Enter a block heading and content in the Main tab as required.
  4. Click Save and Publish.

Adding the Cloze test

  1. Click on the Cloze tab.
  2. Add text into the Question field (optional). This can be a question or instructions to the user which will appear above the cloze test activity, or can be left blank.
  3. Add the words which will be presented as options for filling in the blanks in the sentence into the Options field. Include the correct word for each instance of a missing word, as well as any desired incorrect/alternate options. Each word should be separated by a comma, and appear exactly as it will in the sentence. Do not add spaces between the words.
  4. Add the full sentence to be presented to the learner into the Cloze content field.
  5. Select each keyword and apply the cloze style from the Styles dropdown menu in the formatting bar.
  6. Click Save and Publish.
Options

A feedback button will be automatically created to appear below the Cloze test sentence. Once the user selects their choices for each missing word from the dropdown menu and clicks Feedback, the correct sentence will be displayed. If the correct word was chosen, it will appear in green. If an incorrect word was chosen, it will remain in black, with the correct word shown in brackets.
